Acupuncture for Post-Accident Pain Management
Acupuncture has achieved increasing recognition in evidence-based pain medicine as an effective treatment modality for musculoskeletal pain, neuropathic pain, and chronic pain conditions — including many of the injury sequelae commonly seen in personal injury patients. New York State No-Fault insurance and No-Fault both cover acupuncture when medically indicated for accident-related injuries, making it an accessible treatment option for MAIC patients.
The mechanism of acupuncture analgesia is multifactorial: stimulation of specific acupoints activates endogenous opioid pathways, modulates spinal cord dorsal horn processing, influences descending inhibitory pain control systems, and produces local tissue effects including reduced inflammation and improved blood flow. For personal injury patients, acupuncture is most commonly applied for post-traumatic myofascial pain syndrome, chronic soft tissue pain, radicular pain management, post-concussion headache, and pain associated with degenerative changes aggravated by accident trauma.
From a documentation perspective, acupuncture records must meet the same medical necessity standards as other PI treatment modalities. MAIC's licensed acupuncturists produce structured visit notes documenting the patient's symptom status, the specific treatment provided (point selection with anatomical location and stimulation parameters), the treatment rationale, and the clinical response. VAS pain scales and functional outcome measures are administered at regular intervals to track treatment effectiveness and justify continued care under No-Fault and No-Fault coverage.
Acupuncture at MAIC is coordinated with the overall treatment plan under the supervision of the treating physician. When acupuncture is the primary treatment modality for pain management, it is integrated with the patient's physical therapy program and specialist care. When it serves as adjunctive therapy alongside ESI or other pain management procedures, the treating physician coordinates the timing and goals of the acupuncture course relative to the interventional pain treatment plan.
