What Happened

On Saturday evening, May 3, 2026, police responded to a fatal collision at East 138th Street and Bruckner Boulevard in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx.

According to the NYPD, a tractor-trailer struck a 40-year-old man just after 8:30 p.m. After being hit by the truck, the victim was then struck by a taxi cab. While the taxi driver stopped and remained at the scene, the tractor-trailer driver fled and has not been identified.

The victim succumbed to his injuries. The investigation is ongoing, and police are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.

The Bruckner Corridor: A Repeat Danger Zone

Bruckner Boulevard is one of the most dangerous corridors for pedestrians in the Bronx. The wide roadway, heavy commercial truck traffic from Hunts Point Market, and limited pedestrian infrastructure create conditions for serious accidents.

This is not the first fatal pedestrian crash on this stretch. The intersection of Bruckner Boulevard and surrounding roads have been flagged by NYC DOT's Vision Zero initiative as a high-priority danger zone.

Hit-and-Run: What Victims' Families Should Know

When the at-fault driver flees the scene and cannot be identified, New York has a specific process for victims and their families:

  • MVAIC (Motor Vehicle Accident Indemnification Corporation) — If the responsible driver cannot be found, victims can file a No-Fault claim with MVAIC, which provides PIP benefits to uninsured accident victims or those hit by unidentified drivers.
  • Commercial vehicle liability — Tractor-trailers carry mandatory $750,000+ in liability insurance. If the truck or its company is identified, the commercial insurance applies.
  • Police report is critical — Filing a police report immediately creates the official record needed for any insurance claim or wrongful death lawsuit.
⚖️ Know Your Rights

After a hit-and-run in New York:

  • Call 911 immediately — a police report is essential for insurance claims
  • If the driver is unidentified, file a No-Fault claim with MVAIC or your household's auto insurance
  • Seek medical evaluation immediately — even if injuries seem minor, delayed symptoms are common
  • Note any details about the vehicle (make, color, license plate, commercial markings)
  • Contact a PI attorney experienced with hit-and-run and commercial vehicle cases
